Durant expands reach into restaurant business

A well-known face at the Chesapeake Arena will be expanding his horizons when he opens a restaurant in lower Bricktown next year.

Devon Tower celebrates opening, restaurant

OKLAHOMA CITY — Employees of Devon Energy have been slowly moving in to the new downtown skyscraper for months now.

Tuesday the company held a special ceremony, celebrating the final move and having all employees in the new building.

Devon Executive Chairman Larry Nichols gave a private media tour of the building, starting at the top in Vast, a restaurant located on the top two floors.

Nichols said, “It’s a great view in all directions.”

The view is 850-feet up from the ground.

Nichols said, “When we built this building we got a lot of people who said, ‘Are you going to build an observation deck?’”

He didn’t want just an observation deck but a restaurant where anyone could come, sit and enjoy not only the view but a meal to go with it.

The fried chicken is for today. ‘Winkie’ Dickerson has to stay ahead of the curve in his kitchen because people hungry for his sould food are always coming through the door. “I started cooking when there wasn’t any cooking schools or culinary schools,” he says. “I learned on the job and from watching my mama.”

Brandi Jones helped start A Family Affair Restaurant almost seven years ago. They struggled at first until a few investors stepped in, and until they decided to stick to the ribs of what defined sould food for them. Brandi says, “My definition of soul food is it comes from the soul, from within, from the love of everything that you put into the dish. It’s that certain taste that you’re looking for.”
