Oklahoma’s oldest hunting club up for auction | News
OKLAHOMA CITY – The Sportsman’s Country Club in Oklahoma City has brought hunters and fishermen together for decades.
But now, Oklahoma’s oldest hunting club is up for auction.
The club closed a couple of weeks ago, officials said, because of overhead costs, declining interest in the sport and even the drought has been to blame.
The club’s history is priceless but in two weeks, everything on the property will have a price tag.
“It’s quite a lot of history here,” Louis Dakil said, President of Dakil Auctioneers, Inc. “If these walls could talk, you’d hear a lot.”
The walls of Sportsman’s Country Club would have stories to tell dating back to the end of World War II in the 1940s.
Dakil is giving us a tour because his company is about to put this 18,000 square foot landmark, as well as its 51 acres, up for sale.
“This is probably the largest in the history of the state of Oklahoma of a private club being sold at auction,” he said.
Included on the property, two swimming pools and a lake, fully stocked for fishermen.
That’s a little pricey for most people.
But inside, everything with a sticker will also be sold.
“You can buy this piano right here,” Dakil said. “Here’s another room called the ‘Hunter’s Room.’ They had several different banquet rooms.”
In almost every room, hunting stories have been turned into artwork.
The largest banquet room has held decades of dinners, auctions, even bingo.
In the kitchen, refrigerators, freezers, deep fryers, utensils and more are for sale.
“This kitchen could do a banquet of 1,000 people or more very, very easily,” Dakil said.
Antique furniture sits just outside a renovated bar and nightclub area.
Mementos of past celebrations, like Happy New Year’s hats, have collected dust.
But Dakil said new memories await the highest bidders in two weeks.
“There’s so many things in here,” he said. “There’s something for everybody in this large facility. It was a very fun place to be at.”
The Sportsman’s Country Club auction will be held Friday, April 26 at 10 a.m. at Dakil Auctioneers in Oklahoma City.
