Warmer weather brings out bikers, runners | News
OKLAHOMA CITY – Winter’s chilly grip has loosened it’s hold on Oklahoma.
Many have been waiting for the cold snap to break so they can finally enjoy the outdoors again.
“It is beautiful!” Michael Guevara said, visiting from Texas. “We have been waiting for some nice spring weather. Definitely enjoying the day!”
Guevara is picking up his son from Oklahoma City University.
His son’s bike had a flat tire, so Guevara stopped at Schlegel Bicycles to get it fixed in time for spring break.
“He could manage his way around campus and around the city without a car,” he said.
Warmer weather is bringing out more bikers and runners and they have to share the road with drivers.
“The number one rule of thumb in terms of being safe on the roadways is being seen,” Steve Schlegel said, the owner of the bike shop.
Bright-colored shirts and jackets are a must when you shake off your running shoes or dig out your bike after the long winter.
“You know there`s all kinds of different colors,” Schlegel said. “Bright clothing is really essential this time of year.”
You can also add some lighting to your workout.
Clip flashing lights to your bike or shirt to stand out, especially when it’s dark.
Guevara is a long-time runner and said he believes it’s up to him to keep himself safe.
“I always make sure if I`m running out on the street, I don`t have head phones on or anything like that,” he said.
While everyone should be keeping an eye out for bikers and runners on the road, it doesn’t always happen.
“You`ve got to pay attention to the cars,” Guevara said. “They`re not looking out for you or they`re texting or they`re looking down and they don`t see you.”
As for Guevara’s son, he makes sure he always puts safety first before riding his bike.
“We made sure he`s got a helmet and all those kind of things and that he doesn`t ride without it,” he said.
A reminder: when running, always run face on-coming traffic but on a bike, always ride with traffic.
