Great State: Art With a Heart | News
OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA — Consider a flower, or the wind, mountains or the shape of your heart.
What might they look like to you?
“You just take the colors and blend them into your own,” says young artist Alexis Isaac.
Alexis took some acrylics and got lost in blending yellows and purples.
Five year old Olivia Childers rode her own rainbow on a long arch across her blue paper.
“It’s red, orange, and then yellow,’ she says tracing with her hand.
A couple of Sundays a year dozens of children come up to the Jimmy Everest Center at Children’s Hospital for something other than their regular treatments.
Each of the kids here face challenges with long names like Neuroblastoma and Leukemia.
On regular visits, organizers here say art is a welcome diversion.
“So if they get to create in the art room on clinic days,” explains Art With A Heart Organizer Jenifer Guebert, “it helps them be more receptive to treatment. They’re less anxious. Their stress level isn’t as high.”
These paintings will eventually go up for sale at an event called ‘Art With a Heart’.
Guebert explains, “We have it framed and then the items go up for silent auction in February.”
Olivia Childers has been coming here for treatments since 2010. That’s a lot of rainbows.
But her dad Joel says each one took her to someplace better. “Its something to take their mind off the situation they’re in,” he says. “You get to see that side of them, the side that’s still creative.”
Zander Moore didn’t choose flowers to paint.
On this Sunday he imagined his own picture; three hills, a cross on each. “And then we’re going to make a crown of thorns out of beads,” he explains.
Happy places come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and colors.
Resurrection may be the happiest place of all.
The annual Art With a Heart auction for 2013 takes place the evening of February 23rd in the new Children’s Hospital Atrium in Oklahoma City.
