Horses cause chaos on highway
News

OKLAHOMA CITY – Two horses loose on Interstate 40 led to a serious wreck near Harrah Rd. Friday morning.

It’s Oklahoma, what do you expect,” Jeannie Troxel said.

Troxel chased the horses for hours.

She stopped when she saw the light brown mare and her colt loose as she drove to work at 7 a.m.

“We almost hit the horse,” Troxel said. “All you could do is, ‘Oh my God.’”

Others joined in on the corral, along with the owners, Oklahoma Highway Patrol and Animal Welfare.

They caught the mother, Aurora, and her son, Prince Phillip.

But the mare got free as they worked to load them in a trailer.

Just down the highway, the wrangling efforts had drivers curious on what led to the crash.

Troopers said a white truck was stopped in the middle of the interstate when it was hit from behind and ended up in the trees.

Two were carried away on stretchers.

All the while you can see Aurora running in the background of the wreckage.

After being tranquilized, Aurora stopped.

People closed in on her, finally getting her back in her fenced field.

“We’ve been running on foot back and forth so it’s been quite eventful,” Troxel said.

Corralers were glad it’s over and glad Aurora and Prince Phillip are safe.

Owners said they believe highway workers damaged their fence allowing for the horses to escape.

Animal Welfare said the owners were cited with violations.
