National Guard soldier’s stolen dog returned home | Crime
MOORE, Okla. — It’s a happy reunion; a National Guard soldier in Moore is reunited with his stolen pooch.
Two weeks ago thieves stole the man’s 2-year-old English bulldog named “Sarge.”
The crooks also stole the victim’s computer, his iPad and a shotgun but it was the theft of his bulldog that really hit home.
Now, thanks to Oklahoma City police and a Good Samaritan, the dog and his owner are together again.
With no wife or kids, Phillip Ortiz said the pooch is like family.
“This is my son. He goes everywhere with me. He gets pampered,” Ortiz said.
Luckily this weekend, Oklahoma City police began surveillance on a home at S.E. 21st St. and Lindsey Ave. for suspected illegal activity and arrested two suspects, John Dougan and Richard Phillips.
Inside the home police recovered Ortiz’s stolen electronics, but not the dog.
“The dog came walking down the street and looked tired,” Adriana Nevarez said.
Turns out, Sarge escaped the thieves’ home and another neighbor, Adriana and her kids, took him in.
“They love him and they named him “fat boy” in Spanish,” Nevarez said.
Still, after the weekend arrest, Ortiz put up posters around the suspects’ neighborhood to see if anyone recognized Sarge and, sure enough, Adriana picked up the phone.
“She said, ‘I think I have your dog,’” Ortiz said.
Even though her kids loved Sarge, the mother of four taught them a valuable life lesson.
“It’s just something good to know, even if you love something, you’re a better person if you do the right thing and give it back,” Nevarez said.
“I’m sure they were sad to see him go. She did the right thing. I just thanked her a lot,” Ortiz said.
In all, police found stolen property in the suspects home belonging to several victims.
The two suspects have both been charged with a number of theft and drug-related crimes.
