SPENCER, Okla. — Often times when parents are arrested their children are placed in state custody. The Spencer Police Department is working to help those young victims they meet at crime scenes.

“Anytime our officers are around children whether it’s at school or a crime scene we try to assure them that we are always here for them if they ever need anything and we leave our cards with them,” said Chief Virgil Green. “Often times they end up calling us when they do need something especially when their parents have been arrested.”

In the past, officers pitched in to help fill in the gap for clothing, school supplies and other needs.

But instead of taking collections for each case, Chief Green established a fund inviting the community to pitch in too. The goal is to have resources ready anytime time kids are placed in state custody after an arrest.

“Situations like this are traumatic for them and they have no control over it, so we just try to help as much as we can,” said Green.

Other than unused school supplies, clothing and toys, department welcomes gift cards.
